10 signs you booked a great waxer

After 12 years of operating VAVAVOOM as a “solopreneur,” stepping outside of the sttudio felt like a break-up.  I genuinely love and miss the connections made with clients daily, and being a wax lady has — admittedly — become a huge part of my identity.  However, I fear what my parents, therapist, and mentors said was true.  You can’t stand on hard floors forever.  You won’t expand with your hands in a wax pot all the time.

Eww.  I hate when they’re right.

After a little carpal tunnel, some presented opportunities in the Motherland, and a proposal from a man I’d just met on Facebook, I announced my semi-retirement in 2025.  And you know what? My hands and I are happy in this new space, and excited to receive all good things ahead —but a pinch of guilt still lingered, for a while.

The truth is I did a poor job networking with other licensed waxing professionals in the A, and had very little time to properly hire and train consistent replacements before moving.  Leaving behind over 1,000 supporters with no referral literally kept me up at night.  I know first hand that the only thing harder than getting into a new ATL brunch spot on TikTok is finding a new waxer.  This is your body. Your self-care budget.  Your … ahem … business.

So with the support of my family and beloved VOOMERS, I secretly made my way back to ATL and set up a waxing bootcamp for rising estheticians that are just as passionate about hair removal as I am.  After 3 hard core months of recruiting and training, I couldn’t be prouder of the ladies gracing VAVAVOOM’s new mini suite this May.  The time spent with them made me realize what makes good waxers GREAT, and this article is a way to shamelessly brag on them as well as a checklist for anybody, anywhere, seeking a wax professional.

Whether you’re out here searching elsewhere or transitioning to one of VAVAVOOM’s new team members, here’s how to know you are in the right hands:

1. A great waxer gets to know your skin, FIRST.

Before your waxer ever opens the pot, questions should be asked. Having knowledge of your hair removal history, medicines, and skincare treatments you may be receiving is how we can best protect and serve your body’s largest organ. It also allows us to tailor your experience to you.

2. A great waxer makes you feel at ease.

A major part of this job is understanding body language and matching energy while remaining professional. Whether you are chatty or quiet, nervous or seasoned, one should be able to adjust.  Comfort isn’t extra. It’s part of the service.

3. A great waxer can work with a diverse clientele.

Getting an intimate service can be awkward enough. You don’t need the added uneasiness that comes from feeling like you don’t belong on the wax table. From product selection, technique, and positioning on the table, everything should be tailored to you — not forced into a protocol that was not designed with your hair, skin, or body type in mind.

4. A great waxer gives tailored aftercare advice.

Appointments get you on track with your goals, but what you do between them is where optimum smoothness and intimate skin health lives.  Your esthetician should be able to provide real guidance you can actually follow.

5. A great waxer practices universal precautions.

This means your waxer treats every client as if there’s potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, whether visible or not. Even with the best technique, tiny skin openings can happen, and a properly trained waxer is prepared for that with clean gloves, fresh wax sticks after each pull, and sanitation supplies. The clean girl aesthetic is nice. Clean practices are even nicer.

6. A great waxer respects your privacy.

The wax room has a way of making people feel comfortable enough to open up, and that’s actually a sign of a great safe space. But there’s a line.

Your name, description, and personal details should never be discussed online or with the next client. The only thing the next coworker should know about you is what’s necessary for your skin health.  A great waxer is a vault. They should be able to laugh, listen, and even join in on a wee bit of gossip without crossing over into somebody else’s life.  That’s not just professionalism. That’s integrity.

7. A great waxer is not trying to be known for speed.

Getting a Brazilian wax done in 10 minutes? Totally doable, appreciated, impressive.  Treating each client like a number and moving on autopilot to maintain a record?  Yikes.  Even if you have been a million times, there should be enough space allotted on the books for a brief assessment, thorough cleanliness, and (clutches digital pearls) manners.

8. They test the wax temperature and consistency.

This is a small but necessary step that prevents burns and shows attention to detail.  If she’s moving too fast to check, she’s moving too fast. Period.

9.  They communicate throughout the service.

Communication in the wax room is not just good customer service.  It keeps your body relaxed, your trust intact, and your experience as comfortable as a wax can be. Pro Tip: You should never leave your appointment feeling like something was done to you.  You should leave feeling like you went through this together.

10. They know their limits and when to say “NO.”

We understand the frustration of paying a deposit, arranging your day, and braving traffic just to discover you can’t get a service you were looking forward to.  We assure you that it beats compromised health or poor results because a service provider didn’t want to turn you away.

If the timing just isn’t right after a recent procedure, outbreak, wound, infection, or even an emotionally traumatic event, a trustworthy esthetician will make the hard call to refer you out to a medical professional or reschedule you.  “You’ll be fine” isn’t a clinical assessment, and waxing over compromised skin isn’t smart, brave, or convenient in the long run.

So… What Does This Mean for You?

Now you know exactly what to look for — and what to run like hell from.

If you’ve been rocking with me for years and you’re hesitant about sharing space with someone else, I get it.  Just know that around here, nobody touches VOOMERS without understanding all of the above, and in the words of my parents, therapist, and mentor…

It’s ok to start over.

We hope you’ll do so with our new smiling faces this May.  Thank you for giving VAVAVOOM a chance!
